1811. April 9th. Two men were charged with stealing out of the warehouse of James Newton and Joseph Clay at Bredbury sacks of flour. (The warehouse is near the canal) -- (Chester Courant).

1812. June 8th. Trial at Chester. The Rioters. Several men assembled at Bredbury and entered the Corn Mill of Joseph Clay burning and carrying away flour. They were found guilty, other mills were also affected and 16 men were received the death sentence. (Hamts Chronicle).

1812. Nov. 3rd. Notice is hereby given that the partnership between James Newton and Joseph Clay of Arden Mill within the parish of Stockport in the County of Cheshire. Flour and Corn Dealers carried on at Ashton-under-Line and at Arden Mill under the firm of Newton and  Clay was dissolved by mutual consent who will carry on the business upon their own seperate concern. 1814. April 29th. James Clay age 41 a shoemaker from Spurstow near Nantwich and Jane Minshull age 33 a widow from Spurstow were charged with stealing out of a shop of Mr Richard Owen of Nantwich draper 3 pieces of printed calico. Mr Owen said they came into his shop under pretence of looking at some prints they were seen to be whispering they went out saying they would call again. A witness saw something under her clothes and took the print from her and they were taken into custody. Clay said the woman was not his wife but she had lived with him for eleven months. They were found guilty of stealing. (Chester Chronicle).
